The appropriations process is moving forward in the Congress, despite stories you may read about the difficulties Congress is having in completing a final budget plan for Fiscal Year 2007. The process of writing the appropriations bills that would fund higher education programs has begun, and action by the House Appropriations Subcommittee is expected June 7. This is a critical time to call on Members of Congress to support funding for the Perkins Loan Program. COHEAO is asking all members to do the following:

  • Write your Representative and ask him/her to make Perkins Loan appropriations a priority when he/she speaks with members on the House Appropriations Committee.
  • Write your Senators and ask them to make Perkins Loan appropriations a priority when they speak with members on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
  • If your Representative or Senators are on the Appropriations Committee, ask them to take action directly and support the Perkins Loan Program Capital Contribution and Loan Cancellations. A roster of House and Senate appropriators is included in this e-mail.
  • Involve students, parents, senior officials on your campus or in your organization in this effort.
